You may be good, but are you a true sportsman?
Posted: April 9th 2015, 5.00pm
This season is a zero-risk opportunity for ALL teams to experience Blackball rules.
The SRPL Committee insist that all matches are played in a true sportsmanlike manner which includes making allowances for those less familiar with the rules.
If your opponents ask a question, please help them or take the time to confirm the answer. All teams have a copy of the WPBA Blackball Rules in their pack.
For the 1st few matches, "Can I do this?" is ok. "What should I do here?" isn't.
Together we can bring up the standard of pool in Southampton!
Good luck to all players and above all, enjoy!

Introducing the
Summer Season Championship 2015!
Posted: January 28th 2015, 10.30pm
Running 14th April - 23rd July
• New match format – 9 singles frames. A minimum of 3 players & maximum of 9 per team!
• Group stages leading into Knockout Rounds [like the World Cup or Champions League]
• Maximum of 48 teams in each league day
• Random draw taking you to new venues to play new players
• No seedings for Premier teams
• All teams play a minimum of 10 matches in the 15 week season - subject to entries
• Promotion/Relegation runs between Winter Seasons making the Summer Season 100% risk free!
In the Winter Season, the Premier Division champions are normally viewed as the champions of the whole league. In this new format any team can progress from their group and then win the KO stages to become the 2015 Summer Season Champion!
Take the Plunge!
We want to use this self-contained league where there is no threat to your Winter Season position, to get all teams to try out the BlackBall rules. This was a unanimous vote of all committee members at the recent meeting.
These rules have now been adopted by the UK's professional pool players and are arguably the way that the game is going. The committee are keen to have a recognised national set of rules to remove any grey areas that may currently exist. If you want us to demonstrate these rules at your venue let us know – the committee are here to help!
Don't Worry!
For the next Winter Season you will again have the choice between BlackBall and Old SRPL rules, the same as for this season.
One more thing...
In order to make this taster of the new rules completely risk free, we are making this season a FREE ENTRY to the first 48 teams that register! So:
• No risk to league position
• No financial risk as entry is free
• The chance to try out Blackball rules
• The chance to go to different venues and meet new opponents
What's not to like about that! Get your entries in early!
Registration Opens - Sunday 1st March and packs will be delivered to your venues in the coming weeks.
Important notes:
• Due to the format, there will be NO rearrangements allowed. If your team cannot play the full season (running from 14th April - 23rd July) please do not enter.
• Player transfers between teams once the season has started are NOT permitted.
• New players can only be signed on at group stage matches.
• Registration is completed when a registration form is signed by the Landlord/Landlady and Captain. All players do not need to sign the form to complete registration. Any players whom play the first match will be considered registered to that team.
• Registration is only possible after 1st March and will close when the league is full, or on Sunday 15th March at 5pm
• The Groups Draw will be broadcast LIVE on Thursday 26th March before the Team Knockout Cup Final.
Signing on New Players
Posted: January 23rd 2015, 6.30pm
As per the SRPL General Rules and as voted in at the Captains' Meeting last season, new players can no longer be signed on to your team from now until the end of the season.
Sporting Behaviour
Posted: January 17th 2015, 11.00am
Rule 1 of the SRPL playing rules states "It is intended that players and teams should play 8 Ball Pool in the true spirit of the game and in a sportsmanlike manner."
Deliberately disturbing a player while they are taking their shot in order to gain an advantage is unfair and not sporting behaviour in the committee's opinion and their interpretation of the rules of the game.
Everyone likes the fun and banter at a match, but all players must take great care not to cross the line and go too far.
Therefore, the committee would like to clarify to all players what to do if this type of incident occurs when they are refereeing a game.
The first time in a match [be that frame 1, frame 5, or whenever] that a team or player clearly disturbs the player taking their shot deliberately, then a first and final warning to that person and their entire team shall be given by the referee.
If at any time after that [right up until the end of the final frame] a player is deliberately disturbed again, then a foul shot will be called against the offending team's player(s) and 2 visits awarded.
The SRPL Committee
The season so far...
Posted: November 26th 2014, 20.30pm
At the halfway point of the season here's how the divisions are shaping up so far:
Tuesday Blackball Premier Division
The Icehouse are flying high with a mighty 8 wins from 10 matches giving them a respectable 117 points, a 10pt lead over the Gardeners Arms in 2nd.
The Angel of the South are still struggling to find their form with only 1 win so far.
One outstanding rearranged match in this division: Baizz v Hinkler C.
Tuesday Premier Division
The Shield C (aka Shaggers) are lead the Prem with 7 wins from 9. The Brass Monkey are hot on their heels with a game in hand and only 3pts behind.
Kings Arms B and Elephant B prop up the division but it's all to play for with only 2pts difference between the bottom 3.
Two outstanding matches to be rearranged in this division: Brass v Kings A and Kings B v Hinkler A
Tuesday Division One
Another tight division with only 5pts between 1st (BTC) and 5th (Rileys A). A lack of players at the Drummond forced an early exit for them. The Shield B gain their first win last week. The only way is up!
One outstanding result evidence in this division: Shirley Hotel 3v4 Swan
Tuesday Division Two
Rileys C showing they're a force to contend with the big boys this season with three impressive 7-0 wins so far and 54pts. The Saints are close behind with 51pts.
The Firehouse B and Bent Brief occupy the bottom slots in this division but it could all change with a couple of good wins from either team.
One result missing from this division: Firehouse B v Englishman
Tuesday Division Three
Another tight division with only 1pt between the top 3 teams. The Malvern currently in 1st place with Rileys D second with a match in hand. The new team to a Tuesday, The Keys, are
struggling to find their 'A' game with only one win and 17pts.
There's one rearranged match to be played in this division: Rileys D v Windsor Castle
Thursday Blackball Premier Division
With the withdrawal of both West End Brewery teams, the division has struggled in it's inaugural season but the 4 remaining teams are all keeping the spirit alive and playing some great pool to boot. A special mention to the Chapel Girls for sticking at it and being great fun to play. Your first win will come soon!
Thursday Premier Division
They said they would and now they're proving it; the Bitterne RBL are leading the Prem with 7 wins from 8 and a game in hand over 2nd place Elephant A. The Brass Monkey had a nightmare start to the season not winning until their 5th match. The bottom three (Bridge, Yacht & Freemantle) are split by only 3pts.
Two rearranged matches outstanding in this division: Shield B v Bitterne RBL & Yacht v Shield B.
Thursday Division One
9 wins from 10 and two clean sweeps puts the Hinkler A team firmly at the top of division One with a 14pt lead over second place Bede's Lea. A slow start to the season for the bottom two teams, Keys A with 1 win from 9 and Shield A with none.
Thursday Division Two
Despite two 7-0 wins from the Hare & Hounds, they sit 2nd to the Saints but only by 3pts and have a match in hand. A tight division at the bottom with the Chapel A, Keys B and Robin Hood separated by only 1pt.
One outstanding rearrangement in this division: Hare & Hounds v Shooting Star B
Thursday Division Three
Rileys top the third division, just 5pts above the BTC. A withdrawal of the Obelisk leaves there only 6 teams and the Old Farmhouse and Bittern propping up the division.
One result missing evidence in this division: Inferno 3v4 Old Farmhouse
Team Knockout Cup and Shield
The Team Knockout Cup entered the last 16 this week and all teams are reminded that new players can NOT be registered at Cup or Shield matches. They can only be registered at a league match. See website for specific rules.
The fixtures for the first round of the Team Knockout Shield are live on the site now. If you didn't make it through the first 2 rounds of the Cup, you're in the Shield competition!
Singles and Doubles Competitions
Both Singles competitions and the Old Rules Doubles are down to the last 32 while the Blackball Doubles are down to the last 16 players. The format seems to be working well but all players are reminded to not leave it to the last minute to arrange your match and let Steve Farrow know if you're having issues contacting your opponent or agreeing on a date. Some cracking matches coming up so good luck everyone!
With Christmas fast approaching, there's only a limited number of weeks in which to get the outstanding rearranged fixtures played. I would appreciate it if teams can come to an agreement between themselves to play as soon as possible to avoid having to forfeit unplayed at the end of the season. This particularly applies to the teams still in the Team Cup and Shield competitions. Please notify us if you agree a date to play.
If you've read this far: thank you.
Please remember: we're a friendly league and expect our players to treat each other, the venues and relevant staff with respect at ALL times. Disrespectful and unsporting behaviour will NOT be tolerated and may lead to expulsion from the league.
One players' negative attitude can ruin everyones enjoyment. Don't let that player be you.
Play fair, play well, SRPL.
Singles and Doubles Fixtures
Posted: November 24th 2014, 13.00pm
The next round of fixtures for the Singles & Doubles competitions are now live on the Fixtures page.

Good luck!
Result Cards
Posted: October 7th 2014, 20.30pm
Where possible can all teams send in a photo of their results card rather than putting them in the post. We've had a couple of cards destroyed by the rottweiler the Post Office seem to use to sort the mail.
Photos can be posted to Facebook, to Twitter, Emailled or sent by WhatsApp or MMS to 07787 177 699.
Please ensure the photo shows the entire card and is legible.

Teams choosing Blackball rules will become part of the new SOUTHAMPTON BLACKBALL POOL LEAGUE. Those opting for SRPL rules will stay as they are.

Captains' Meeting - Voting Results
Posted: April 15th 2014, 7.30pm
Following a successful and well attended Captains Meeting the following items will become active NEXT SEASON:
-
Proposed that the SRPL offer the option for teams to play Blackball rules instead of usual SRPL rules and a separate division/league is run alongside the usual Tuesday and Thursday matches. This is subject to sufficient demand to allow fixtures to work alongside the existing leagues. The committee to determine the exact structure required.
FOR=22, AGAINST=20 -
The 'D' will no longer be required on the table. Any reference to the 'D' becomes 'the baulk area'. ie. players break-off from anywhere within the baulk area.
FOR=37, AGAINST=5 -
New players may not be registered for, or play in, the last 4 league matches.
FOR=42, AGAINST=0 -
The SRPL to start to record player statistics
FOR=24, AGAINST=18 -
Dan Grennell joins the committee to compile player stats
FOR=40, AGAINST=2 -
Player of the Division award introduced for the player that wins the most frames
FOR=42, AGAINST=0
All other items were either voted against or not seconded.

Captains' Meeting - Proposals Received
Posted: April 9th 2014, 9.00pm
Below are the proposals that we have received so far (in no particular order).
If you have an opinion on any of these then please discuss with your Captain for him to raise at the meeting on Monday. If any Captains want to second any of these proposals then please let Steve Farrow know via direct message or email [comps@srpl.org.uk].
If you want to propose anything then please send them to Steve via your Captain. I need to have these by 6pm on Sunday for inclusion. If you [Team Captain] propose an item then please ensure that you are at the meeting to have your say and explain why we should vote for what you are suggesting..
-
Proposed that we start to record player statistics
-
Proposed that we use the player statistics to introduce a new Player Of The Division award for the player that wins the most singles frames in the season. Win percentage to be used in the event of a tie.
-
When a player has cue ball in hand, they can play from baulk. The use of the 'D' is removed
-
If the cue ball has come to rest on the playing surface following a foul shot, then the player having two visits may proceed to play from where the cue ball lies, or the cue ball may be played from any position on or behind the baulk line [or D if point above is not passed]. Moving the cue ball in this manner does not count as a shot, or visit. (Players are advised to ask the referee to hand them the cue ball).
-
New players may not be registered for, or play in, the last 4 league matches
-
Talking between doubles partners. Doubles partners may talk to each other while their opponents are at the table. Once the balls stop moving from the last shot of their opponent's visit, talking must stop and the relevant player must move to the table and commence their visit.
-
Proposed that if an away team fails to show for a match in the first half of the season, the second match is reversed so the offending team does not benefit from a corresponding home match.
-
Deciding Colours From the Break
a. If no Colours are potted on the break the table is "Open".
b. If one or more Colours are potted on the break the player then has a right and obligation to verbally advise the referee of a choice of Colour before proceeding. Failure to do so is a Foul. If a player is fouled under this rule the opponent faces an "Open" table.
c. If the player nominates a Colour that was potted on the break, the player is on that colour no matter what happens next.
d. If the player nominates a Colour that was not potted on the break, to be on that Colour, the player must pot a ball of that Colour on the next shot. -
Legal Shot:
1. On all shots, the player must:-
a) Cause the Cue Ball's initial contact with a ball to be with a ball "On", AND THEN
b) Pot a ball "On" OR; Cause the Cue Ball or any Object Ball to contact a cushion.
2. Failure to play a Legal Shot is a Foul.
3. Exceptions:
a) On the Break, the conditions of a Legal Shot do not apply.
b) When playing out of a Total Snooker a player is only obliged to meet the conditions of (1)(a) above. -
Proposed that we change from 7 frame matches to 9 frame matches consisting of 6 singles frames and 3 doubles frames.
-
Proposed that the points system is amended to 2 points for a win, with an extra bonus point for a 7-0 match result [3 points].
-
Proposed that the committee explore all options for reducing travel to away matches, possibly by forming divisions based on venue locations leading into a Knockout stage to decide the league champions. To be implemented if a feasible solution is identified.
-
Proposed that the points system be amended to 1 point per frame won by the team, plus 4 points awarded to the team winning the match.
-
Proposed that the SRPL offer the option for teams to play Blackball rules instead of usual SRPL rules and a separate division/league is run alongside the usual Tuesday and Thursday matches. This is subject to sufficient demand to allow fixtures to work alongside the existing leagues. The committee to determine the exact structure required.

Posted: March 12th 2014, 8.30pm

-
All captains, please confirm your attendance personally so we are able to gauge numbers.

-
As items are proposed, they will be posted on the SRPL homepage. The committee reserve the right to veto impractical suggestions and will explain why at the meeting.
-
Any items requiring a vote will be decided at the meeting by those present. The only exception is a proposal that involves a complete change of the playing ruleset to either Blackball or World rules. If proposed, it will then be confirmed by a full postal vote of all teams in the league and approved by a yes vote for the change from 75% of teams or more - unless this is able to be achieved by sufficient attendance at the meeting.

New Committee Member
Posted: June 11th 2013, 15.30pm
We are pleased to announce that Steve Farrow has recently joined the SRPL committee to assist with the running of the league.
Steve brings many years of experience in running pool leagues having previously been General Secretary and then Vice Chairman of The Bedford Pool League [96 teams] and also running the Beds Independent Pool League [40 teams] on his own. He has also held positions at a County Level as a former Chairman of Bedfordshire and Secretary of Hampshire, and at a regional level as Rankings Secretary for Region 4 of the English Pool Association.
I'm sure you'll all agree that this extra assistance and experience will help us to improve the SRPL going forward.
Presentation Night

You requested it, we've done it!
This season the Presentation Night will be held on a Saturday so everyone can make a proper night of it! We've got trophies, food, competitions and a raffle. Save the date!
An apology...
Posted: June 4th 2013, 4.00pm
It's been brought to my attention that there was an error within the "SRPL League Rules" document supplied at the outlay of the season to all venues and available to download from the website.
The error stated that the point system was 5 points for winning 5-2 and 4 points for 4-3. This was an oversight when trying to simplify the table showing the system. The correct score is (and always has been) 6 points for a win.
The web page showing the rules has always been correct and the downloadable version has now been updated.
The league tables have been correctly calculated all season; so there will be no change to league positions.
Please accept my apologies.
Regards, Peter - SRPL Chairman
SRPL General Meeting - Agenda
Posted: April 25th 2013, 12.30pm
Would you like your say on the SRPL? We're looking to have a General Meeting to gain YOUR view on anything and everything to do with the SRPL. Intially, we're looking for general numbers, and more importantly items to discuss.
As we've mentioned on Facebook, we don't want to organise this then a) have no one show up, as has happened in the past (albeit before the wonderful new means of communication that is Facebook) or b) have the meeting "hijacked" and turned into a free-for-all of people talking over each other etc.
In order to form an agenda, we invite you to post on Facebook (comment on the "Pinned" post at the top) or email us the issues that YOU would like discussed. From that, we can draw up a suitable agenda and try to allocate sufficient discussion time to each of your concerns/wishes. At that point we will take a poll of people that want to attend and then choose a venue based on the numbers involved and a roughly central location for everyone.
Obviously, there are a lot of team members that don't come on Facebook, and I would encourage those of you that do to involve them in any discussions within your respective teams so that they have a voice as well.
