About Smile4Wessex and the Wessex Neurological Centre:

Located at Southampton General Hospital, the Wessex Neurological Centre (WNC) provides acute/specialist neurological care to patients from across Hampshire, Dorset, Wiltshire, West Sussex, the Isle of Wight and the Channel Islands - a region populated by over 3 million. Each year the centre treats around 18,000 patients for conditions such as brain haemorrhages, brain tumours, stroke, traumatic brain/spinal injuries and numerous other neurological conditions.

Smile4Wessex is dedicated to providing support for the WNC and the patients it cares for. Our appeals fund projects that enhance the range and quality of care provided at the WNC, or sponsor pioneering research that furthers the understanding and treatment of neurological conditions. Since 2004, over £1 million has been raised to enable such projects, including;

  • a dedicated neurological intensive care ambulance
  • a Paediatric Video-Telemetry Suite (used to assess children with severe epilepsy for life-changing corrective surgery)
  • the UK's first installation of a new generation of operating microscope with Fluorescence Imaging technology
  • sophisticated Intra-Operative Nerve Monitoring equipment
  • co-funding for the new 'Smile4Wessex Children's Neurosciences Centre'
  • preliminary research into a new, non-invasive method of measuring intra cranial pressure
  • a pilot project to develop a new treatment for aneurysmal subarachnoid haemorrhage.

Our current appeal aims to provide a state-of-the-art 3D-Endoscopic Neurosurgery System. It will make it easier for surgeons to carry out procedures such as pituitary gland tumour resections, and also make possible operations that simply cannot be conducted using existing 2D endoscopes.

Neurological conditions shape the lives of millions - with your support we help mould those shapes into Smiles.
